THE POP-UP MICKEY MOUSE STORY AND ILLUSTRATIONS
BY THE STAFF OF THE WALT DISNEY STUDIOS
This is one of many pop-ups books produced by the Walt Disney Studios in the 1930’s. Printed by Blue Ribbon Books, Inc., New York, 1933. Blue Ribbon was a major player in pop-up books at this time and this piece shows the skill of the manufacturer in the midst of what many consider to be the golden age of pop-up books.
The pop-ups are printed on both sides and carefully placed in the book, undoubtedly by hand. The book measures 8 3/4 x 6 3/4 x 3/8 inches. This particular piece is in good condition with moderate scuffing to the covers, worn corners and a split to the spine from the tail to not quite half way up the spine.
Given how this was a very youth oriented product, it’s amazing that some of these books have now survived many generations of young hands. You can see that this piece has complete and functional pop-ups with minor repairs.
The Walt Disney Company made a pop-up for each of their major characters. There is a Minnie Mouse pop-up that we’d like to post if we could find a good surviving example of it.
Aside from the pop-ups, this book is filled with seventeen black-and-white illustrations and a fun story. You can see, through this book, how the Walt Disney Company projected Mickey’s character as a loveable, caring and somewhat absent-minded character.
Overall, a nice example of this somewhat rare Disney pop-up book.
Enjoy!
