Gather your little goblins and monsters because it’s time for Halloween! Whether you are decorating pumpkins, choosing costumes or wandering thru a corn maze, these fun picture books will help kids everywhere get in the spooky spirit.
Little kids will have fun learning about trick or treating with these cute books designed for the youngest readers. Spooky Pookie by Sandra Boynton is our personal favorite, but active hands will also enjoy lifting the flaps on Construction Site Gets a Fright and Trunk or Treat: A Lift the Flap Pop-Up Story. Let your favorite naughty dinosaurs teach about trunk or treat etiquette in How Do Dinosaurs Say Trick or Treat or ask Pete the Cat to help teach counting with Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins. The new book, I Love My Fangs, is a fun story for those with lose teeth and Spooky Wheels on the Bus will have you singing along.
Elementary aged children will love the pictures and creative storylines in the following Halloween Favorites. We especially love Jasper Rabbit’s Creepy Tales by Aaron Reynolds and Peter Brown and I Got the Spooky Spirit by Connie Schofield-Morrison and Frank Morrison. We were also delighted by the stories in Trick or Treat, Crankenstein and Frankenslime. Fans of Scaredy Squirrel will laugh out loud with Scaredy Squirrel Scared Silly and will cheer when the Bad Seed returns in The Good, the Bad, and the Spooky. Little Ghost Makes a Friend is a sweet tale about friendship and Spookley the Square Pumpkin teaches about diversity. Kids will laugh out loud as they read Brunhilda’s Backward Day and Amelia Bedelia Scared Silly. Three of our favorite Witch books include How to Catch a Witch, A Spoon Full of Frogs, and The Little Witch Who Lost Her Broom. Last but not least, Poultrygeist is hilarious but a little macabre.
Older tweens who enjoy something a little more scary will enjoy these spooky tales. Ghoulia and the Bunnicula series is a fun place to start. The Goosebumps Retro Scream Collection and Monsterstreet: The Halloweeners series will keep the fear going all month long. Nightmares is a hilarious trilogy for the middle grades and The Dollhouse Murders is a classic that continues to scare each new generation. Coraline is truly creepy and the boxed set by Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell will delight long-time fans. Finally, the iconic Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark will never be forgotton. Happy Reading!
