The Christmas season is upon us and it is a wonderful time to encourage your child to read, write, imagine and compare! Introducing you child to classic Christmas stories can be a part of a family tradition. Introducing your child to a new spin on an old tale can encourage critical thinking, acceptance of differences, and can spark creativity.
As a kindergarten teacher, I love to read the classics and follow up with a book that has a different point of view or different solution to the problem. Christmas stories are reinvented every year so naturally is easy to find a book to compare to a classic. Below you will find a few Christmas Classics followed by some suggestions for books to compare to the classic.
As you read through the different stories, here are some questions to keep in mind and answer after reading.
- How are the characters the same or different?
- How was the problem solved differently?
- Do you agree with the author’s interpretation of the story?
- Which illustrations do you like better?
- Why do you think the author wrote this story?
