There are lots of celebrities cashing in on the children’s book business. But are the books any good? Remarkably, some of them are! Here are a few of our favorite picks:
Celebrity comedians love to make us laugh. And what is more delightful than laughing with a child during bedtime? B.J. Novak’s “The Book With No Pictures” is one your kids will want you to read aloud over and over again because it’s the “book that makes grown-ups have to say silly things!” Repeated readings will result in laughter every time you HAVE to say “I am a monkey who taught myself to read.” Older kids will also like his “My Book with No Pictures,” which allows your child to self author the silly phrases that make them giggle the most. Jimmy Fallon’s series of board books turns baby’s first words into fun and laughter with “Dada,” “Mama,” “Baby,” and “Nana.” His book “Con Pollo” with Jennifer Lopez is a fun bilingual adventure. And Jimmy’s “Only 5 Sleeps til Christmas” captures the magical countdown to Christmas. Other comedians add personality and laughs to Jimmy Kimmel’s “The Serious Goose,” Seth Meyers’ “I’m Not Scared, You’re Scared” and Max Greenfield’s “I Don’t Want to Read this Book.”
Some celebrity authors teach big life lessons and empathy thru their children’s books. Dolly Parton shows hope in overcoming the difficulties of poverty thru the story of her rag coat in “Coat of Many Colors.” Barak Obama shares his love for America and personal heroes in “Of Thee I Sing, A Letter to My Daughters.” LaBron James’ teaches kids to give back to their communities in his book, “I Promise.”
Many celebrity authors use their popularity to promote individuality and being unique trough their stories. The most popular of these children’s books are Jaime Lee Curtis’s collection of “When I Was Little,” “My Brave Year of Firsts,” and “Today I Feel Silly.” Books including Kristen Bell’s “The World Needs More Purple People,” Reece Witherspoon’s “Busy Betty,” Serena William’s “The Adventures of Qui Qui,” and Channing Tatum’s “Sparkella” series are fun, energetic books that celebrate being yourself. JoAnna Gaines teaches children to work together and celebrate their talents and abilities in “The World Needs Who You Were Made to Be.” Lupita Nyong’o inspires children to see their own unique beauty in “Sulwe.” Julianne Moore’s “Freckleface Strawberry,” also helps children to appreciate their differences in appearance.
